Three types of EPB are described below :-

1.  Cable puller type :-  It consists of a central electro mechanical actuator with integrated electronic controller which actuates conventional Duo servo brakes or integrated calipers via bowden cables.

2.  Caliper integrated type :-  This System uses combined calipers with integrated actuation and power electronics. The activation is done either by means of an independent control unit or a control unit already available in the vehicle. This system has the advantage of low cost and lesser weight.

3.  Duo servo type  :- In this control, the EPB functions are performed by a central control unit which actuates the actuators on the Duo servo brakes. The system is used both in the premium class and for heavy vehicles. A separate ESC system ensures the emergency brake function. The advantages of this system are low weight, decentralized actuators and highest hill holding forces.

The Duo servo parking brake is a highly efficient, self boosting drum brake, fitted in the brake disc brakes.  It is operated mechanically and is completely separate from the service brake.

TRW's concept parking brake :-  A new electric drum in hat (eDIH) parking concept brake has been announced by TRW. This brake system eliminates the requirements of hand levers or foot pedals in the cabin interior, which means greater freedom in designing of vehicle cockpit and also better crash resistance in the pedal area.

This brake system is completely electric, there are no connecting cables, which reduces the cost of assembly and also keeps it simple in construction. Being fully electric it integrates with other safety systems. Additional functions like Auto hold and Hill hold are also there and the system is idle for larger vehicles, up-to 8600 kg GVW, which require larger clamping force for parking than is provided by currently available parking brake caliper systems.
