Layout of a combined electrically and hydraulically operated brake is shown in figure. The front axle brakes are operated hydraulically, whereas an electro mechanical brake is there at the rear axle. Either of this operation is by wire.

The details of the continental electro-mechanical wheel brake of the EHC are shown in figure.

S is the standard primary brake, P is the parking brake integrated with the electromechanical brakes at rear axle. The system works on standard 12 V power system and there is no hydraulic connection to the rear axle. Fully integrated parking brake with intelligent and optimized idle concept enables a constant function chain from assisted driving to secured parking.

The EHC brake system in combination with MK 100 ESC hybrid can also be used in vehicles with regenerative brake system.

The advantages of EHC brake system are :-

1.  High operational ease and safety

2.  Integration of braking with other vehicle control function.

3.  Use of the electromagnetic brake at the rear axle leads to faster response time in safety system such as pedestrian protection and emergency brake assist.

4.  No hydraulic connection to rear axle

5.  Potential for reduction of CO2 emission by regenerative brakes and by brakes with reduced residual torque.
